KNOW WHAT VINES TO PLANT

KNOW YOUR VINES

Knowing what kind of vines to plant on a trellis or arbor is important. Believe it or not, vines can be invasive, heavy, hard to maintain or a nuisance if you do not choose the right kind of vine for your space and apparatus. Arbors, mainly made of wood, PVC resin or metal, can look extraordinarily beautiful and romantic in your gardens if the right vine is grown over it. Many vines are fast-growing and are perennials, some can tolerate winter cold snaps, while others can get too heavy, hide little crawly insects to jump down, and overgrow invasively into other spaces. Ivy can take over as ground cover and literally destroy wood and other materials, while Wisteria produces beautiful blooms and tons of bees. Be sure to research what space, sunlight verses shade, watering, growth habits and growth expectations before committing vines onto arbors or trellises. What you plant makes all the difference in the world.
